Arriving at Dawn Workshop
"This is a journey we must take
to find hope and a sense of belonging…"
Director Note
Each of us carries our own unspoken memories, stories of our struggles and survival. We might all think of ourselves as travelers, strangers in this world, longing to find connection and a sense of belonging. I invite you to share your stories and listen to others, to walk in other people’s shoes for a while. And maybe, along the way, we will realize the things we are looking for are not so far away. Only when we step out, do we have the chance to find hope after the storm.
This show is inspired by Shaun Tan’s wordless picture book -- the Arrival. We want to discuss the concept of finding our own sense of belonging through the lens of immigrants’ experiences. Further to point out that each of us is an immigrant in this world, every day we are all on a great journey of growth. Over the summer, Rose, my collaborator, and I interviewed lots of immigrants and shared our own journey from which we have created 5 archetypes of people (people who go on a journey for different reasons.) In today’s showcase, you will see the beginning of one character’s journey. In the near future, (when we get enough resources, fingers cross,) I will produce a full-length show for this work where you will see more (archetypes of) people and their journeys.
This is a showcase of the bigger ideas and concepts. In the near future, I hope to produce a full-length show for this work where you will see more archetypes/people and their journeys.
